Mark, I wouldn't count on their effectiveness though. I remember once, a friend of mine had bought some cheap Chinese quartz from eBay and he brought me the crystals to check them out (since I am sensitive enough). I must say that the crystals were very clear and everything but when I hold them in my hand, they were like a dead thing... I made the conclusion that they might be synthetic. 
Chemically speaking, synthetics are supposed to be refined but what makes a crystal alive is the earth energy it absorbs through the years of its formation. The information "trapped" into the crystal has to do with many factors other than its chemical composition. The crystal in its final stage is so much more than particles put together.
Nevertheless, I always encourage people to experiment, so I will be looking forward for your results.  ;-)
